How to choose a removals firm you can trust
Handing a stranger the keys to everything you own is a big ask, and not all removals firms are the same. Here’s what actually matters when you’re choosing one — from a firm that would rather you asked.
They survey before they quote
A trustworthy firm wants to see what’s moving — in person or by video — before putting a number to it. A quote pulled out of thin air over the phone, with no sense of your volume or access, is a quote that tends to change later.
The survey is also where the awkward stuff surfaces: the access, the stairs, the items that need special care. Getting it right up front is what keeps moving day boring, in the best way.
They’re properly covered
Ask about goods-in-transit and liability cover, and make sure you understand what’s included. A firm that handles this clearly, and talks you through arranging extra cover for high-value items, is a firm that takes the risk seriously.
Clear terms are a good sign generally. If the booking spells out the cover, the timings and the responsibilities plainly, you’re dealing with people who’ve nothing to hide.
The reviews ring true
Look past the star rating to what people actually say. Real reviews mention the crew by their manner, the care taken, how a problem was handled. Repeat customers and word-of-mouth recommendations are worth more than any advert.
A family firm lives or dies on this. When your name is on the van, every move is a reference — which is a powerful reason to do each one right.
They give it to you straight
The best sign of all is honesty that costs the firm something: telling you a part-load beats a full van, that an item’s cheaper replaced than shipped, that your timeline needs more slack. Advice against their own short-term interest is advice you can trust.
You want a mover who treats your move like it matters, not like a slot to fill. Ask the questions — a good firm will be glad you did.
